Remove Diesel Exhaust Fumes and Soot: Standards

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recognizes and advocates the need for the containment of vehicle exhaust emissions to a level within regulatory guidelines.

As stated by NFPA 1500. 9.1.6: "The fire department shall prevent exposure to fire fighters and contamination of living and sleeping areas to diesel exhaust emissions."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) set standards for permissible concentration limits for harmful gases that are found in diesel exhaust fumes. NIOSH permissible standards for chemical concentrations are 35 parts per million for CO and 1.5mg/m3 for SO2. OSHA standard for carbon monoxide (CO) is 50 parts per million of air and permissible exposure limit for SO2 is 5 parts SO2 per 1 million parts air. (For more on standards, please refer to Appendix C. A detailed list of these standards can also be found at OSHA Manual Standard Number: 1910.1000; 1910.1000 TABLE Z-1.)
